This is the renovation of a 1964 split-level home in the Rivercrest neighborhood of North Arlington. The existing basement and foundation was kept for significant cost savings while the rest of the house was deconstructed and donated to charity. From there we worked to design a modest blend of mid-century modern and modernist contemporary to create a spacious home filled with natural light, intriguing interior spaces and predominant views to the tree filled backyard. A graceful and fluid connection to the outdoors was achieved by keeping the entrance and transition to the back yard and patio at ground level. Central to the house is a double height Great Room with exposed beams on a gently sloped ceiling, oversize windows, stone accent wall with double sided fireplace, a modernist feature stair with wet bar below, fluid access to the integral kitchen with oversize South facing windows and an East facing dining nook with a wonderful view to the back yard we call “Sunny Side.” Adjacent to Sunny Side is a screened-in porch with a high sloped ceiling and easy access from both the kitchen and the patio. A formal dining room is in it’s original location at the front of the house and enclosed by a feature wood-slat wall. The split-level orientation was maintained by creating a Rec Room with fireplace, wet bar and 11’ ceilings along with a guest bedroom down a half flight of stairs. Two bonus rooms in the house are a lounge off the foyer with excellent views to the rear and a loft lounge with sloped ceilings and views to the front, side and great room below. All bedrooms on the upper level have gently sloped ceilings, oversize windows, walk-in closets and full baths.
