This is the evolution of an earlier project: the Garage & Man Cave. As a bit of time passed the program changed to include a four car garage, a guest suite, gym, office and outdoor areas all to be constructed at one time. The ell plan of the structure is positioned to minimize it's presence as seen from the approach to the farmhouse and display the cars in the garage via a ribbon of oversize windows. A patio, balcony and rooftop terrace provide wonderful al fresco opportunities with amazing views of the James River. The core of the modern carriage house is a 9' diameter masonry fireplace that begins in the guest suite, extends up to the patio, then to the office and continues to the sky deck above to provide an open, outdoor rooftop fireplace.
