This is a proposed Children's Science Museum at the crest of Afton Mountain in Central Virginia. Currently in the schematic design phase: the museum has been conceived as a continuation of the mountain, rising in slopes of stairs and terraces to harmonize with the environment, celebrate the outdoors and create a crest of it's own with spectacular views to both the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the beginning of the Piedmont to the east. All roof spaces are occupied by walkways, flowering gardens, grass, trees, and amphitheater steps which may be used for outdoor learning classrooms, displays and exhibits. The building has been designed on the footprint of the existing Afton Inn and pays homage to it's original form. The interior spaces will be filled with natural light, varied and flexible.
